Shotfirer Supervisor

Job Purpose:

This is a functional role for a Shotfirer Supervisor in the Curraghinalt underground mine. Your working areas may be anywhere within the underground mine where explosives are stored, transported, or used, and you will be responsible for the health, safety and daily work of the crew assigned to you. Your area of responsibility may change from time to time, and you will be notified of this by your Mine Manager.

Shotfirer Supervisors will be required to engage with the Engineering, Technical, Safety, and other departments at times. The Shotfirer Supervisor will work closely with the cross-shift Shotfirer Supervisor regarding communication, reporting and management of working areas. The Shotfirer Supervisor will report to the Mine Manager or other appointed person.

Duties and responsibilities:

The Shotfirer Supervisor will be responsible for all relevant requirements and regulations including but not limited to the following:

• All statutory regulations relating to health & safety, mining, explosives and environmental management relating to the use, storage, transfer and management of explosives.

• Ensure records of explosives, including detonators, boosters and blasting accessories are meticulously maintained at all times, with any discrepancy notified immediately.

• Compliance with blasting standards as set out by the manager of the mine.

• Ensuring that personnel under their charge have been trained and certified in accordance with the use and management of explosives and that the blasting design of each area of work are followed

• Responsible for communicating blast design changes with the engineering department for approval.

• Ensuring that personnel under their charge comply with approved mine safety and health practices.

• Compliance with any other safety and health requirements as directed by the Mine Manager.

• During routine inspections discuss safety and health matters with personnel under their charge.

• Withdrawal of workmen in case of danger

• Without prejudice to the generality of the above duties, ensure that all relevant persons comply with the company rules, specifically concerning the following:

  • Safe Operating Procedures (SOP)

  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

  • Barricade procedures

  • Working at heights

• Other company procedures may be added from time to time

• Have specific and up to date knowledge of the explosives and accessories in use at the mine

Personal Requirements:

• Hold a valid Mine Supervisor ticket

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a mine supervisor

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an operating underground mine in a shotfirer role

• Hold a valid driving license

• Ability to work both independently and be part of a team

Competencies:

• Ability to read drawing, blast design and sequence.

• Reasonable computer skills for Word and Excel.

• Ability to complete work reports on both hard copies and computer-based systems.

• Ability to communicate with team members and mine management.
