Job Purpose

This is a functional role for a Shotfirer in the Curraghinalt underground mine. The Shotfirer will be a part of the development and production mining team, with responsibility for transport, management and use of explosives at all stages of the mining cycle.

Shotfirers are required to work within the mine teams and with other teams such as safety, maintenance and technical services.

Only authorised Shotfirers are permitted to manage the transportation, loading, and charging of explosives in the mine. Authorised Shotfirers must comply with legislation which states ‘Shotfirers should have undergone a period of training and achieved an appropriate shotfiring qualification. Additionally, they should have undergone a period of close supervision by an authorised shotfirer until the mine operator is satisfied that they can undertake shotfiring duties safely and effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate Shotfiring duties to the standards described in the relevant Safe Operating Standards (SOP) and in line with relevant legislation, including:

    • Transportation of explosives from storage areas to the mine working area using special blasting equipment.

    • Storage of explosives at the working areas in appropriate containers.

    • Risk assess the area where charging and blasting is due to take place, prior to any work taking place.

    • Charging of explosives into drill holes and blasting sequence as per agreed plan.

    • Demarcation of charging and blasting area with barricades and signage.

    • Implement appropriate security requirements in blasting area from the time the holes are charged to when they are blasted.

    • Return unused explosives to storage areas.

    • Maintain appropriate records of explosives at every stage of the process.

    • Handle any misfires as per the SOP.

    • Supervise any other unauthorized employees who are engaged in the process.

  • Report any unsafe activities or actions related to explosives.

  • Promote a healthy and safe environment for yourself and others.

  • Report on safety and operational activities in line with Supervisor requirements.

  • Perform other duties as required.

 Personal Requirements

  • Education to a minimum of GCSE or equivalent.

  • Qualified as a Shotfirer in line with company requirements and legislation.

  • Satisfactory police clearance.

  • Capable of recording the storage and movement of explosives at various stages including delivery to site, transport to working areas, return to storage and usage.

Competencies

  • Ability to understand and follow engineering drawing.

  • Ability to complete forms relating to explosives movements.

  • Ability to communicate with team members and supervisor.
