Job Purpose

This is a functional role for a miner in the underground mine. The Longhole Production Driller will be a part of the production mining team, responsible for drilling production blast holes, prior to charging and blasting operations. Drillers also carry out other related duties as directed by the Mine Supervisor.  Drillers will be required to work within the mine teams and with other teams such as safety, maintenance and technical services.

Production drill holes are charged with explosives and then blasted, with the ore then loaded and hauled to ore passes, crushers or to surface by conveyor.

Longhole Production drillers should be able to follow instructions, understand drilling drawing and instruction sheets from the engineering team, set up properly to assure quality of drilling, adjust drilling feed to minimize deviation.  Work with others and help ensure that all safety regulations are followed.

Only trained and authorised Longhole Production Drillers are permitted to operate the drilling machines.    

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate a Longhole Production drilling unit to the standards described in the relevant Safe Operating Standards (SOP) including:

    • Carry out a pre-start check before operating the drilling unit.

    • Carry out a risk assessment in the area prior to drilling.

    • Ensure that the drilling plan is understood and followed.

    • Ensure that the hole locations and marked up.

    • Make note of any variation from the drilling instruction sheet, such as blocked holes, breakthroughs, deviation and make note on the drill. return sheet. Adjust drilling to achieve the predicted hole target.

    • Complete a shift report for drilling activities for supervisor and/or the Technical Services department.

  • Carry out the duties in line with mine standards and relevant legislation.

  • In addition to pre-start checks, perform periodic checks on the machine, carry out small repairs and solve problems in line with training received.

  • Work with the maintenance team to ensure the machine is serviced and maintained in proper working order.

  • Report any unsafe activities or actions related to the machine and the role of driller.

  • Promote a healthy and safe environment for yourself and others.

  • Achieve targets as agreed by the mine and technical teams.

  • Perform other duties as required.

 Personal Requirements

  • Education to a minimum of GCSE or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in roles that include operation of large equipment.

  • Have a good understanding of heavy-duty machinery.

  • Be proficient with hand tools.

  • Be able to read and understand engineering drawing and information sheets.

  • Drilling experience in the quarry industry or open pit is a major asset.

 Competencies

  • Ability to understand drilling instruction sheets and to complete shift reports.

  • Ability to visualize and manipulate figures in 3D.

  • Ability to communicate with team members and supervisor.
