LHD Operator (Small)

Job Purpose

This is a functional role for a machine operator in the underground mine. The Load Haul Dump (LHD) operator will be a part of the development and production mining team, moving ore and waste from development and production areas of the mine, either loading onto trucks or into orepasses or remuck areas. LHD operators will operate the LHD manually and remotely depending on circumstances. They will also carry out other related duties as directed by the Mine Supervisor.  

 LHD operators will be required to work within the mining teams and with other teams such as safety, maintenance and technical. Only trained and authorised LHD operators are permitted to operate a LHD unit.

 LHD operators may from time to time stop the task they are performing if unsafe conditions are observed as a result of their work activity.

 Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate an LHD unit to the standards described in the relevant Safe Operating Standards (SOP) included:

  • Carry out a pre-start check before operating the LHD

  • Carry out a risk assessment of each new area where loading is to take place

  • Work with Haul Truck operators for the safe loading of ore and waste

  • Communicate with the Haul Truck operator before during and on completion of loading to ensure that loading and haulage is carried out safely

  • Observe all transport rules in the mine and on surface

  • Park the LHD unit in the appropriate areas

  • Keep clean equipment, fuel and lube the LHD unit every shift

• For remote controlled LHD operation, additional training and authorisation is required, and additional controls are required for operation of the LHD

  • Signage and barricades to ensure no unauthorized access is made to the area

  • Testing of the remote-control unit prior to starting

  • Remote stand or other safe area to operate from

• Ensure that appropriate safety controls are in place prior to working in a specific area

• Carry out the duties in line with mine standards and relevant legislation

• In addition to pre-start checks, perform periodic checks on the machine, carry out small repairs and solve problems in line with training received

• Work with the maintenance team to ensure the machine is serviced and maintained in proper working order

• Report any unsafe activities or actions related to the LHD operation

• Promote a healthy and safe environment for yourself and others

• Achieve targets as agreed by the mine and technical teams

• Perform other duties as required

 Personal Requirements

• Education to a minimum of GCSE or equivalent

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in roles that include operation of large equipment
  

• Have a good understanding of heavy-duty machinery
  

• Be proficient with hand tools

 Competencies

• Good operating ability in confined space
  

• Ability to communicate with team members and supervisor
