Job Purpose
This is a functional role for a machine operator in the Curraghinalt underground mine. The Bolter operator will be a part of the development and production mining team, using specialised mining equipment to install ground support and mesh into the roof and sidewalls of mine openings, as per standard procedures or for specific ground support requirements. Bolter operators also carry out other related duties as directed by the Mine Supervisor.
Bolter operators will be required to work within the mining teams and with other teams such as safety, maintenance and technical. Only trained and authorised Bolter operators are permitted to operate a bolting unit.
Bolter operators may from time to time stop the task they are performing if unsafe conditions are observed as a result of their work activity.
Ground support is used to provide stability and secure the mine tunnel and other excavation. Holes are drilled into the rock and various type of ground support installed depending on ground condition and excavation. Ground support drawings will be provided to the bolter operator by the engineering service. Bolts are normally 1.8m or 2.4m long and provide active support into the surrounding rock mass.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operate a Bolter unit to the standards described in the relevant Safe Operating Standards (SOP) including:
Carry out a pre-start check before operating the bolter unit.
Carry out a risk assessment prior to starting the bolting operation, including observing the roof and sidewalls for loose ground.
Ensure the bolter unit is properly equipped with the proper ground support needed as stipulated by engineer drawings stipulated.
Always have the proper engineering drawing for the ground support of the area that you are assigned to.
Bolt from supported ground to the unsupported ground and never expose yourself to non-supported ground.
Carry out an inspection of the area following the bolting and advise the area supervisor of any issues to be addressed, prior to the next step in the cycle.
Ensure that the required barricades are in place during bolting activity.
Carry out the duties in line with your daily plan, mine standards and relevant legislation.
Perform periodic checks on the machine, carry out small repairs and solve problems in line with training received.
Work with the maintenance team to ensure the machine is serviced and maintained in proper working order.
Report any unsafe activities or actions related to the machine and to the area where the bolting is in progress.
Promote a healthy and safe environment for yourself and others.
Achieve targets as agreed by the mine supervisor and technical teams.
Perform other duties as required.
Personal Requirements
Education to a minimum of GCSE or equivalent.
Minimum of 3 years experience in roles that include operation of large equipment.
Have a good understanding of heavy-duty machinery.
Be proficient with hand tools.
Competencies
Good sense of observation and analysis skill.
Ability to communicate with team members and supervisor.
